History Dialogue Program
When discussing the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, people will inevitably
talk about history. But what role does history really play? How is
conflict affecting the discourse about history?
Together with Neve Shalom, CCRR prepares a joint
workshop on the role of history in conflict. We believe that history
teachers are closest to the issue: They teach the subject at schools,
and they hear the students’ opinion in their classrooms every day.
In the planned workshop, teachers from the Palestinian and the Israeli
side will meet to discuss the impact the way history is taught can have,
the way history is used and misused, and how it can help to stop
escalating conflict and build a just peace.
As a first step, we are preparing to have individual meetings for each
side. During these meetings, the participants will discuss how each
side regards history and its role in conflict.
In a second step, we plan to host meetings for
both sides and to have initial discussions about the historical aspects
of the conflict. We hope that we will be able to come up with some
recommendations as a result of these discussions: How to deal with
history in conflict situations and how to teach history in an
environment of conflict.
