In October 2006, the CCRR formed a youth group with the aim of
reaching out to the Palestinian youth, which makes up more than 50% of
the current Palestinian population and is most easily influenced and
affected by the current environment of conflict and insecurity. The main
objective of the Youth Group is to transform the environment of violence
into one of peace, respect and hope. Such is achieved by engaging the
participants into activities that promote and encourage them to develop
and pursue their ideas, hopes, and hobbies through group activities,
including theater, folklore, dancing, and trips around West Bank. While
the CCRR facilitates the youth in their activities, most activities
answer to the expressed needs of the teenagers and are initiated by
themselves.
Currently, 11 teenagers and 2 leaders of the
CCRR Youth Group are in Steyr, Austria for a cultural exchange and a
“building bridges” experience with the Austrian initiative of Youth
Service for Peace, Middle East. A 2 weeks program will introduce the
Palestinian youth to Austrian culture and have Palestinian traditions
introduced to the Austrian Youth. This exchange in the name of “peace”
provides both sides with a unique opportunity of sharing past experience
and bonding for the future. Activities include living in host families,
workshops on peace, a visit to the United Nations in Vienna, a cultural
event with traditional performances by all the kids, and several other
excursions.
