"Uni-religious Activities for The Interfaith Project"

On 27 August 2008, CCRR conveyed a workshop in cooperation with the Directorate for Tribal Affairs. The meeting was hold in the premises of the charitable Society “Beit al-Masinin” in Jenin and was attended by the Mufti of Jenin, Sheikh Muhammad Sa’eed Salah, the Director of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Zaid Zakarneh, the Director of Tribal Affairs in Jenin, Mr. Bassam Kamil, as well as 30 participants, among them several sheikhs and specialists in the field of religion.

The workshop was the second event organized by CCRR in the framework of the interfaith dialogue project, after the meeting with Sheikhs on the same subject, organized by CCRR on 8 July 2008, in cooperation with “Al-Mustaqbal – Palestinian Future Society for Democracy and Development” in Nablus.

The aim of both meetings was to discuss how Islam is seeing the other religions from the perspective of its own traditions and in the context of the daily life and the political situation in Palestine. The participants discussed the general situation of Islam, especially in regard to the mostly negative perception that is nowadays present in the West and misused for political and military operations in the region. The issue of Muslim-Christian coexistence in the Palestinian context was also addressed, as well as the challenges of the relationship with Judaism under the shadow of the Israeli occupation. Another part of the workshops was allocated to the question of how the sheikhs thought that the Christians and Jews from the region perceived Islam, his traditions and teachings.

CCRR was pleased by the high attendance to these meetings and the lively and interesting exchanges that took place during them. The participants underlined the importance to exchange on religious matters with regard to a unified religious position in Palestine and expressed the desire to have more opportunities to meet with other Sheikhs in Palestine. It was also stated that it would be beneficial to have meetings with representatives from the other religions.

The interfaith project started in January 2008 and will be running for three years.
